The History of the Realm of Dagoneth

history Record

I. The Age of Chaos (Pre-Chauntean Era)

Approximately 150+ years ago.

To the Dagonethian historian, the era before unification was not defined by political inefficiency (as the Valentians claim), but by Spiritual Abandonment. It was a time when the land rejected the people.

The Silent Earth: The fertile plains of the south were locked behind the mountains, untamed and unreachable. The people huddled in the northern islands and the rocky western coast, relying on the sea for survival while facing constant raids from the "Wild Lands" across the Dagon Strait.
The Fractured Faith: Worship was splintered among petty local spirits and silent idols. There was no unifying guidance, only the brutal struggle of clans fighting for meager resources in the shadow of the peaks.

Dagon's March (The Foundational Myth of the West)

Epoch: The Age of Chaos (Pre-Chauntean Era)
Key Figures: Dagon (First High Steward / Founder)
Geographic Route: The Dagon Strait (Southwest) → The Valley Corridor → Lake Dagon (Northwest)

Historical Overview: Dagon's March is the foundational genesis event of the Dagonethian state. During the untamed and brutal Age of Chaos, the figure known only as Dagon emerged from the horrors of the southern Wild Lands. Historical records from the era are fragmented; Valentian scholars often depict him as a desperate refugee fleeing the chaos, while Dagonethian military texts revere him as a native warlord who grew disgusted by the lack of order and turned his back on the wilds to forge an iron-clad civilization.

Regardless of his origin, Dagon led his followers in a brutal crossing over the treacherous Dagon Strait. Deeming the southern plains too open and undefendable, he rejected them in favor of a grueling exodus north. The march did not stop until the survivors reached the defensible, rocky shores of an inland body of water (now known as Lake Dagon), where he ordered the construction of a "Spiritual Fortress."

Cultural & Geopolitical Impact:

  • The Symmetrical Anchor: Just as the Eastern nation of Valentia is inextricably tied to the establishment of law through the bloodline of its first monarch, Valerius I, the Western nation takes its name from Dagon, whose legacy represents the survival of chaos through absolute control.
  • The Sentinel Mindset: The grueling nature of the march and the horrors left behind in the Wild Lands forged the psychological foundation of Dagoneth. Their absolute, paranoid militarism is not merely cultural; it is ancestral trauma. They view themselves as the supreme guardians of Ardynia because Dagon himself taught them what unchecked chaos looks like.
  • The Crucible: The Dagon Strait is viewed not just as a body of water, but as the crucible of their civilization, a border watched over meticulously by modern outposts like Hearthfire to ensure the chaos of the Wild Lands never follows them north.

II. The Awakening (The Chauntean Stabilization)

Approximately 150 years ago.

The turning point of history was not merely a climatic shift, but a Divine Intervention. The arrival of the Chauntean Order is viewed in the West as the "Great Opening."

The Miracle of Sunreach: The Order revealed the Valley Corridor—the single, treacherous pass through the mountains—and led the people to the Southern Reach (Sunreach). There, the earth was blessed with eternal fertility.
The Great Migration: The population center shifted. The people did not just settle; they were saved. The establishment of Sunreach turned Dagoneth from a starving coastal conclave into the agricultural powerhouse of the continent.

III. The Unification and The Covenant

Approximately 100–120 years ago.

While Valentia unified under the Crown to manage laws, Dagoneth unified under a Covenant to manage survival. The Realm formalized the relationship between the secular nobility and the Church hierarchy.

The Steward State: Governance in Dagon (the capital) evolved as a partnership. The Nobility defended the borders, while the Church managed the harvest. Unlike the East, where the Church is subject to the Crown, in the West, they are pillars of equal height.
The Logistics of Survival: The Unification was driven by the "Long Haul." The food was in the south; the capital was in the north. The nation formed around the necessity of protecting the supply line through the Valley Corridor. This created a culture of rigid hierarchy and discipline—because if the line breaks, the nation starves.

IV. The Era of Stewardship (Modern History)

The last 80–100 years.

Dagonethian history views the modern era as a test of endurance and logistical prowess. While Valentia grew complacent in its integrated security, Dagoneth remained vigilant.

The Maritime Expansion: With the interior fed by Sunreach, the West turned its eyes outward. Westgale was fortified to connect the north and south by sea, reducing reliance on the treacherous mountain passes.
The Trade Rivalry: House Trellivar and other merchant families rose to prominence, aggressively expanding Dagonethian influence into the Neutral Territories and Valentian markets. To a Dagonethian, this is not greed; it is insurance. They believe that economic leverage over the East is the only way to ensure the North–South trade balance remains favorable.

V. The Current State (The Vigil)

The Present Day.

Dagoneth views itself as the Sentinel of the West. While they honor the peace with Valentia, they view their eastern neighbors as spiritually dangerously lax—obsessed with paperwork while ignoring the rot in the world.

The Anxiety of Distance: The vast physical distance between the food source (Sunreach) and the seat of power (Dagon) keeps the nation in a state of perpetual alertness.
The Spiritual Mandate: The Realm believes that the Chauntean blessing is a trust that must be guarded. Recent disruptions (such as the necromantic incidents mentioned in Council reports) are seen not just as crimes, but as heresies—violations of the Covenant that allowed civilization to exist in the first place.

Summary of the Dagonethian Worldview

To a Dagonethian, history is the process of maintaining life through discipline. They believe that survival is a fragile gift granted by the Divine and sustained by the Hierarchy. If the chain of command fails, or if the supply line is cut, the Chaos of the past will return.
